Heart of the Kootenays

by Rob Crowder, Nelson

Today with tired legs the team rode from Castlegar out to the village of Procter. Riders had endured numerous steep mountain passes on the previous days but pressed on and got on their bikes and pedalled for the families we support.

“We ride because we can and when we get tired we think of those who can’t and what they would give to have this simple gift that we take for granted and it makes us ride harder for them”

We started out the day with and amazing breakfast at the Castlegar legion and from there we made a quick stop at the Crescent valley fire hall. After a brief rest we rode to the Nelson RCMP detachment for an amazing BBQ lunch with “crisps”.

We met an amazing family today that we assisted and there wasn’t a dry eye in the group. It’s moments like those that remind me why I ride and tirelessly raise money. Although we have an amazing medical system with caring professionals there’s still a gap that needs filled.

After lunch the team was extremely fortunate to be able to participate in an indigenous ceremony and canoe ride with the Westbank First Nation.

We finished the day at the village bakery in Procter. We were fortunate to be able to be provided with the best cinnamon buns in the West Kootenays.

I’m always amazed at the outpouring of generosity of everyone along the way who provide the riders with much needed food along the way. Without them we wouldn’t be able to assist as many families as we do which leaves me with a final quote by Albert Pyle which I think sums it all up
“What we do for ourselves stays with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal “

Thanks for reading.
