A Hot Climb and Descent into Grand Forks

by John Bauer, Kelowna

Today started with an energy infused breakfast at the Osoyoos Legion who also provided us with a very kind cash donation. Immediately afterward we began the Anarchist mountain climb. The cool morning provided needed comfort for the riders to ascend the 15km climb averaging a 5% grade. They attacked this with the hearts and lungs of giants.

We knew temperatures were climbing during the day, so our focus was on making sure we stayed hydrated. Once at the summit we were greeting by our hosts at the Summit RV recreation site. Here riders replenished their energy with wonderful lunch packs provided by the Oliver Lions club.

The riders endured heat and hills through Rock Creek, Midway into Greenwood. Riders were greeted at the Deadwood Junction with much anticipated cool, snacks and the amazing WHITE WATER bars. These are packed with much needed nutrition and general Greenwood goodness.  If you ever go through Greenwood, be sure to stop in at Deadwood Junction for an amazing coffee and perhaps a bar. You won’t be disappointed!

From there, we worked our way to the Eholt summit where we had a short break to refill water, stretch and begin the 20km descent into Grand Forks. It’s a stretch providing a little fun for those wanting to hit the speed and do some pacing teamwork.

This is what happened for the riders today. There were a few close calls which can happen when the heat creates some dehydration resulting in some challenges. But throughout this entire stretch of long high and hot highway, not one minute passed without memories of the children we met before this day, and thoughts of the ones we will meet in the days to come.

Upon our arrival in Grand Forks the riders went to visit Joan Hiram and her companions at a local care home to thank her for the 22 years of service to Cops for Kids and providing lunches, coffee, snacks and lunch for the team at the top of the Paulson. Joan provided us with amazing food and cupcakes—she called them Cop Cakes. It was such a pleasure to ride by and acknowledge her service. We miss her.

Citizens on Patrol and Elks provided significant donations for the children helped by Cops for Kids. The perfect end to a tough day.

Tomorrow, the Paulson Pass awaits. There are a few butts hoping the road will be gentle.
