Grand Forks to Castlegar

Day 3 – Grand Forks to Castlegar

As the riders woke from their slumber with a nervous anticipation of what laid ahead it was noted the sun was rising and no clouds were in sight. This was a new experience and one to look forward to.  You could feel the anxiousness as each rider prepared their bike for the day’s adventure. With a thank you and photo at Grand Forks Inn we were off to Omega II for breakfast. Fuelling up with a wonderful breakfast from people who have supported the ride for years and have such a huge heart, it was amazing. If you are in Grand Forks or just passing through stop in and grab a bite.

Despite a late departure from breakfast time was quickly made up as we hit the road heading for Christina Lake. Making a quick stop at the Visitor’s Information Centre and to meet with longtime supporters and local officials providing well wishes and much appreciated donations to helping the many children in need.

On the road again there was no more putting off the well know Blueberry Paulson Pass. This is the longest climb on the route and one everyone has a respect for. This year would be different from previous years as the sun was shining and the day was warming up. Water bottles were filled, snacks loaded into the jersey pocket and individuals selected their playlists to settle into the grind ahead. 3, 2, 1 and we’re off.

With each turn of the pedal the kilometers started to pass. As we climbed the heat was steady and the body started to feel the strain. Sweet poured from under the helmet and dripped onto the bikes as water and electrolytes were consumed, each rider had to dig deep to keep pushing ahead. With the passing of time each member of the team completed the climb. There was cheers and praise as rider after ride conquered the climb. We were greeted with homemade chilli prepared by family and friends of the riders and provided by Safeway in Castlegar, BC.

What goes up must come down and after climbing to the summit it was time to descend into Castlegar. After a slow gruelling climb, the speed was a welcomed change. With a schedule to meet the riders pulled into the Castlegar City Hall where they were met by local dignitaries and a family who shared their experience on how Cops for Kids supported their child and family. Listening to their story made the exhausting day fade way.  It reconfirmed the reason we ride. We suffer for a few days with aches and pains while pedalling but many children are going through so much more daily.

With the day completed it was off to the Colander for supper and time to rest for another day ahead.

Huge thank you to all those providing accommodations, food, and support along the way.
