Guest Rider Reflection – A Day with Cops for Kids

by Steve Mercandelli, Cranbrook

We kicked things off bright and early in Creston with a hearty breakfast served by the Creston Lions Club. There’s nothing like a plate of hot food and warm smiles to get the day started right. They also provided a nice cash donation to help us help the local kids in the community.  Once we were all fueled up, we rolled out of town with an escort from Creston’s first responders —  lights flashing, making us feel like rockstars on two wheels.

Our first stop of the day was in Yahk, where we were greeted by a small but mighty crowd of local kids and seniors who came out with snacks and encouragement. It’s amazing how a simple wave or cheer can boost your energy for the ride ahead. As we made our way towards Cranbrook we  had a little picnic lunch on the go — Save-On-Foods in Creston had generously provided everything we needed to refuel mid-day before our approach to Cranbrook.

Our arrival was met with another warm welcome at the RCMP detachment. Seeing the support of the detachment come out to support the team was truly heartwarming and we picked up some nice donations from Bridge Interiors and more. But the day wasn’t without its bumps — quite literally. One of the support vehicles had a little breakdown en route. Thankfully, Cranbrook Towing came to the rescue and got it to Cranbrook Dodge, where the team quickly got us back on the road. We’re so grateful to both businesses for their generosity and fast action. That kind of support keeps this tour rolling — literally.

Dinner was hosted by Boston Pizza, and we were treated to a great meal courtesy of Mel, the new owner. His generosity and dedication to the community didn’t go unnoticed — thank you, Mel, for feeding a very hungry crew.

The highlight of the day, hands down, was the Jail & Bail event at Tamarack Centre. The community showed up in a big way — we had a bunch of “jailbirds” turn themselves in (or get nominated!) and together we raised a significant amount of money for local kids in need. It was a fun and lighthearted way to rally support for a serious cause, and I was proud to be a part of it.

Tomorrow, the team continues the journey, heading up toward the Trans Canada Highway. It’s been an honour to ride even just one day alongside this dedicated group. The heart, effort, and teamwork behind Cops for Kids is something truly special — and I’m grateful to have been a small part of it. I’m missing the group this year, but am glad I was able to be a part of it for the day. Wishing the team safe travels as they continue making a difference, one kilometre at a time.
